Obturator prosthesis

Service

Many a times, a patient comes to a dentist/oral surgeon with an advanced carcinoma/cyst/tumor in the maxillofacial region. Most commonly, the cyst/tumor carcinomatous tissue/extra soft tissue growth is excised out with a thin rim of bone or half to total amount of bone specially maxilla or mandible and others. Removal depends on extension and grade of tumor. After removal of part of upper jawbone, a permanent defect is created.

Sometimes, due to improper development of maxillofacial structure, children may be born with defects at birth.

An obturator prosthesis is a removable device that fills a gap in the roof of the mouth after surgery or due to a congenital or acquired tissue opening.

An obturator prosthesis is a removable device that fills a gap in the roof of the mouth after surgery or due to a congenital or acquired tissue opening.

It replaces lost tissues and teeth, helps with speaking, chewing, and swallowing.

Success depends on:

  • Patient’s overall health,
  • Size of defect,
  • Presence of scar tissue, etc.
