Sometimes tooth/teeth may come out of its socket due to trauma. This is called "Tooth Avulsion.
Avulsed tooth also can be saved if the patient comes early to a dentist. The success rate depends on:
- Type of extraoral storage (Is the tooth dry or moist?)
- Time of extraoral storage
- Is the PDL (Periodontal Ligament) seriously damaged?
- Stage of root development (open or closed apex)
The main aim for replantation of an avulsed tooth/teeth is to preserve the tooth.Integrity of the socket and it prevents resorption of alveolar bone. If the tooth is dry and extraoral storage time is more than 1 hour, then it has a negative impact on prognosis.
The patient needs to carry the avulsed tooth/teeth and visit a dentist. Common mediums where the tooth/teeth is kept are:
- Milk
- Saliva
- Normal Saline
- Hank's Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) etc.
Good prognosis:
- Moist tooth
- Very less extraoral time
- Viable PDL tissue
Tetanus prophylaxis should be considered.
Treatment of the knocked-out tooth typically involves replanting the tooth and then stabilizing it with a splint.
The patient should come to the dentist for follow-up at a regular interval.
Treatment protocol may vary between a permanent tooth and deciduous tooth.
